Buckeye drops out in much of surrounding forest, with cherry more abundant on convex positions, basswood in concave. Downslope below road buckeye is more abundant.;Upper middle slope of Black Mountain, below spruce zone. Cool NE aspect, rocky slope with "rock rivers" and sloping seeps. Plot is a rocky bowl with several large buckeye mixed with matrix-forming northern hardwoods (basswood, sugar maple, ash). Understory is diverse and probably lush in season with ferns and mosses most evident at this late date. Slope is dissected by old logging trails from selective cut.

Small patch of buckeye near its upper elevational limit. Buckeye is lightly scattered at this position, mostly in seepy and rocky bowls.
